FCN Honors Best Newspaper Work of 2008

Awards of Merit in the overall excellence category went to the Minnesota Christian Chronicle, Kansas City Metro Voice, the BC Christian News, and Good News in Florida.

FCN is an affinity group within the Evangelical Press Association (EPA), and its annual contest is held in conjunction with the larger group's contest. EPA Executive Director Doug Trouten said, "Congratulations to Manna for a year of great service to their community. I've watched this publication since it began publishing, and it's been great to see strong improvements from year to year. The crew at Manna does a great job."

FCN gave awards in a number of other categories, honoring the best work being done in a variety of areas. Judges were asked to award a first-place prize in each area, and up to four additional places at their discretion.

Best General Article (short): First place honors went to Manna, with additional honors going to Minnesota Christian Chronicle (second place), Christian Examiner (third), Good News in Florida (fourth) and Blue Ridge Christian News (fifth).

Best General Article (long): First place went to ChristianWeek, with additional honors going to BC Christian News (second place), Kansas City Metro Voice (third), and Good News Etc. (fourth).

Best Interview Article: First place honors went to Manna, with additional honors going to ChristianWeek (second place) and BC Christian News (third).

Best Personality Feature: First place honors went to BC Christian News, with additional honors going to Good News in Florida (second place).

Best Reporting: First place honors went to Christian Examiner, with additional honors going to Good News Etc. and Minnesota Christian Chronicle (tied for second), BC Christian News (fourth), and Blue Ridge Christian News and Christian Press (tied for fifth).

Best Editorial: First place went to Christian News Northwest. Three publications tied for second-place honors in this category: Kansas City Metro Voice, Manna and the Minnesota Christian Chronicle.

Best Review: First place went to the Christian Examiner, with additional honors going to ChristianWeek (second place), BC Christian News (third), Kansas City Metro Voice (fourth) and Good News Etc. (fifth).

Best Column: First place honors went to BC Christian News, with additional honors going to Minnesota Christian Chronicle (second place), Good News Etc. (third), Kansas City Metro Voice (fourth) and Manna (fifth).

Best Candid Photo: First place honors went to Christian Press, with additional honors going to Blue Ridge Christian News and Christian Examiner (tied for second place).

Best Publication Design: First place honors went to Manna, with additional honors going to Christian Examiner and Minnesota Christian Chronicle (tied for second place), Kansas City Metro Voice (fourth place) and Blue Ridge Christian News (fifth place).

Best Cartoon: First place honors went to Christian Press, with additional honors going to Minnesota Christian Chronicle (second place), Christian News Northwest (third), and Christian Examiner (fourth).

BC Christian News and Minnesota Christian Chronicle tied for the highest number of awards in the contest, with each winning seven. Manna had the most first-place awards with four.

Doug Trouten, executive director of the Evangelical Press Association and founder of the Fellowship of Christian Newspapers, said, "The work being done by regional Christian newspapers continues to improve. Christian newspapers are built on the community newspaper model, but serve an audience that is defined by faith as well as by geography. These publications fill an important niche, covering local news in a way that national Christian magazines can't, and providing a Christian perspective that local secular newspapers won't.
