In mid September, some 70 current and prospective Christian magazine publishers from six French-speaking African countries will descend on La Sabliere, a conference center near Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
For seven days they will listen to six experienced trainers speak on the basics of magazine publishing, from concept to finished product. They will learn the keys to successful magazine publishing and how to produce a magazine that will impact the lives of readers.
The “Introduction to Magazine Publishing” course is presented by Magazine Training International, which has been hosting international magazine training events in the developing world for three decades.
According to Founder and President Sharon Mumper, there are relatively few Christian magazines in Francophone Africa.
“I’m looking forward to meeting Christians in magazine publishing in West Africa,” said Mumper. “Because our website and most of our resources are in English, we’ve had little contact with French-speaking publishers. However, they are now asking for training in magazine publishing. Few French-language resources on publishing are accessible to them.”
The MTI team has been completing a new 250-page textbook, especially designed for magazine publishers in less-resourced regions of the world. A French-language edition has been translated for this conference.
“We expect this conference will ignite the passion of participants for Christian publishing and its power to transform their churches and communities,” said Mumper.
This is MTI’s second conference in Africa; they hosted a training event in Kenya last fall. A two-week training program in Nigeria is in the planning stages for 2021.
MTI’s work is dependent on donations to help underwrite the costs as many attendees are unable to pay for course tuition.
