For several years, EPA freelancers have built a vibrant virtual community with Zoom meetings where they share experiences and provide both professional and emotional support for one another.
“It’s inspiring to hang out with like-minded writers,” said Paola Barrera Ruiz. “I always leave our meetings encouraged and wanting to continue cultivating the craft and the relationships it brings!”
Former EPA board member Carla Foote said, “Regularly connecting with professional peers helps me continue to grow and learn. And the camaraderie and support are also personally encouraging.”
Now, EPA will expand these free virtual conversations to other interest groups, including editors, designers, writers, and social media managers. These virtual gatherings will allow members to network with colleagues who do the same kind of work, swap insights, and learn from each other’s experiences.
The hour-long format will be an open and informal conversation with no stated agenda, although occasionally a specific topic may be addressed with a discussion led by an industry expert.
“It’s always fun to see everyone and catch up,” said Stephen Clark, who is one of the facilitators of the freelancer meeting. “This is a great way to generate new ideas… (and) get advice for dealing with problems. One of the best parts is being able to share the other stuff of life and pray for one another. Each month, it’s an hour well spent.”
