A single-entry competition

EPA is launching a pilot program for a Best in Class Contest that will have member magazines competing for awards based on print circulation.

A recurring comment from members with small budgets and limited staff has been they find it difficult to compete with magazines produced with significant resources and large staffs. While a competition based on circulation is not a perfect solution, the Best in Class contest should help level the playing field for many publications.

2020 Pilot Contest

This 2020 Best in Class contest is a test competition to gauge interest and participation. This contest will not replace the annual Awards of Excellence.

Deadline for entry: Friday, August 28, 2020

Contest Details

  • The single-entry Best in Class contest will judge the design and editorial content of the entire publication (a single issue).
    • Magazines, which temporarily suspended print production due to COVID-19, will be permitted to submit a digital issue in PDF format, in lieu of mailing a hard copy.
  • The number of levels and range of print circulation for each level will be determined based on the total number of entries submitted.
  • Separate categories, based on format and not on circulation, will be offered for newsletters and newspapers.
  • Digital member entries will be divided into two categories: traditional paginated PDF format and content-driven websites.
  • Entries will be judged by two judges in each level/category with scores averaged to determine the winners.
  • Entries will consist of the submission of two copies of a single issue (or a PDF).
  • Winners will be announced in early October.
  • The first-place winner in each category will receive an engraved Best in Class award. Frameable certificates will be presented for up to four runners-up.

Entry and Submission Details

  • Cost for entry is $50.
  • Magazines holding dual print/digital memberships will need to process each entry separately.
  • Print entry submissions will consist of two identical copies of a single issue in order to have copies for each of the two judges.
  • For this 2020 pilot program, entries can come from issues published since July 2019 through current issues.
    • This includes issues dated as Spring/Summer 2019 or June/July 2019 (as long as the issue date range includes the month of July)

Deadline for entry: Friday, August 28, 2020
