Emerging Journalists Recognized
Recognizing and encouraging up-and-coming talent is important to EPA, which is why the Emerging Journalist Award was created a year ago.
This year at the EPA convention five young journalists received awards.
Emerging Journalist Awards were given to Marissa Sullivan of Lifeway Research, Schuyler Vander Wilt of Answers in Genesis and Rachel Streich of Cru Storylines.
Marissa’s dedication to impactful storytelling and her commitment to excellence have distinguished her as an exceptional journalist and editor. Her work reflects a deep understanding of the local church and the needs of its leaders.
Schuyler excels at writing for Kids Answers magazine and blog, crafting clever, kid-friendly copy on topics from “Did Jesus have a belly button?” to “Why does snow sparkle?” Schuyler also has the attention of our contest judges, having won three first place Higher Goals awards for her writing in the past two years.
Rachel’s work includes reporting on major world events such as the 2023 World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal, and the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. She demonstrates an ability to find and pitch compelling story ideas, uncovering creative angles that reveal the heart of each narrative. Rachel maintains a clear focus on communicating how God is the hero in the stories she tells.
Audrey Jackson of The Christian Chronicle was recognized with an Emerging Photojournalist Award for her skills in both writing and photography. She has traveled worldwide to pursue interesting and important stories, from a COVID-19 hospital ward in Honduras to refugees in Ukraine to impoverished girls in South Africa.
An Emerging Visual Artist Award went to Caylie Smith of Alliance Life. Caylie is described as one who “stands out from others, not only because of her talent, but also because of her masterful incorporation of faith concepts into the visual realm.”
